Community Wildflowers

Wilder Hyde and Abbotts Barton Community Group are working in collaboration with Winchester City Council to develop wildflower areas around Abbotts Barton and Hyde. We have launched a project in 2021 using two grass verges on Chaundler Road, Abbotts Barton. These areas were prepared and spread with green hay, which is rich in wildflower seeds and will now be cut less often to allow the existing wildflowers and grasses to grow. This will create an improved habitat for wildflowers, pollinators and small mammals.

Here are photos of Olly, Huey and Max who kindly cut the 2 verges while Ingrid, Eileen, Lisa and Joe collect and take away all the cuttings. This hard work will help increase the biodiversity on the verges by encouraging wildflowers to grow.

We hope to roll this out to other areas in the future. If you would like to get involved in the project, please get in touch!
