Swifts

SWIFTS

  • Swifts are the amazing acrobats of the sky. You will recognise them for their incredible flying and screeching call. They are a different species to swallows, house martins and sand martins. Swifts never land except inside their nests – they sleep and eat on the wing.

    1. They visit Winchester in May every year to breed. They depart again in August to return to Africa for the winter.

    2. The number of swifts have declined by more than 50% in the last 22 years but we can help by putting up swift boxes, not blocking up nest sites in houses and by wildlife friendly gardening which provides insects for them to eat.

    3. Fascinating facts: swifts can fly up to 60 mph, they can fly 1000s of miles in one go, swifts have very short legs and can’t take off from the ground, the chicks can go into a state of torpor if food is scare and parents have to journey to find it.
